A Message from Mrs. Ormsbee

Greetings Herbison Woods Families!

We are excited to begin the month of March, as we begin our Reading Olympics for March is Reading Month.  The hallways are beginning to fill with decorations, and we are looking forward to activities and spirit days as we get our students excited about reading.  Please see below for specific information about the upcoming month.

Our spring Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled for March 19 and 20.  We will be hosting both an in person and virtual night to accommodate various schedules.  A SignUp Genius will be sent out to families on Friday, March 8 to register for a time.  Please be looking for this in your email.  We look forward to discussing your child's progress with you.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Alicia Ormsbee

Principal

A Note from Mrs. Nowak

Herbison Woods Families,

Students have been doing an amazing job earning class Panther Paws, and are so close to earning a fun assembly! Please continue to encourage your child to work hard and meet our expectations of respect, responsibility and safe behavior as a class.

You might ask yourself why we often have an incentive or motivating factor for students to work for; shouldn't they just be motivated to make good choices just because? Research into behavior has shown that students (and adults!) respond more to positive reinforcement than negative. Think about reward cards you have for stores - you continue to shop in those places because they offer you an incentive for doing so.

The same goes for our systems at Herbison Woods. We invest in students by teaching desired behaviors and then acknowledging positively (with Herbie Bucks, Panther Paws, words of praise, common goals, etc). Students will then see the connection and work to display those desired behaviors. Positive motivation doesn't always have to be items, sometimes just hearing the words, "I'm so proud of you," is just as powerful.

Thank you for supporting your child and our endeavors to see positive behavior choices at HWE!

In Partnership,

Rachel Nowak

Spring Picture Day Announcement

Spring Picture Day is coming this week!

March is Reading Month

We are so excited here at HW to celebrate March is Reading Month!  Our theme for this year is The HW Reading Olympics - Go For The Gold! to celebrate both our love of reading and the upcoming summer Olympics in Paris this year!  The students will be decorating medals and torches to decorate the halls and competing in a school-wide competition to see whose class can ‘win’ the most medals using their reading logs.  There will also be spirit days to get everyone excited about reading.

Below are links to our Spirit Days Calendar, Reading log, and Design Your Own Medal competition.

Music Notes from Mrs. Broughton

HWE 5th Grade Choir Club Flyer (2).pdf

The Herbison Woods 5th Grade Choir Club is back! The HWE Choir Club is for 5th grade students who would like to try singing in a choir! This is a fun, no-pressure way to experience and learn fun songs, as well as the camaraderie of singing in a group! The choir will rehearse weekly after school on THURSDAYS from 3:35 p.m.- 4:40 p.m, starting APRIL 4th and running through MAY 23. The choir will culminate in a concert with the 6th grade choir on the evening of Thursday, May 23, as well as optional singing opportunities at a Lansing Lugnuts game and the DeWitt Community Showcase. The choir will be co-taught by Mrs. Broughton (HWE Music teacher) and Mrs. Schippers (DMS Choir teacher). Students who enroll in the class will receive a t-shirt to wear at the concert. If interested, please register online at fecc.dewiƩschools.net, the Community Ed office, or call (517) 668‐3460.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Mrs. Broughton (broughtonb@dewittschools.net).

P. E. Corner

Herbison Woods students spent the month of February participating in the Kids Heart Challenge for the American Heart Association.  Along with learning about their heart, students also spent time learning about their heart and worked on cardiovascular activities.  I am happy to report that students raised $8,510.92 for the American Heart Association!  A quarter of all students finished Finn's Mission which included learning about Hands-Only CPR and Warning Signs of a Stroke lessons.  Congratulations on a very successful fundraiser!
